German car maker Volkswagen have launched the compact sedan model Ameo in India, and have set a price for this car that ranges between INR 5.24 lakh and INR 7.05 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
The Volkswagen Ameo, which has been built keeping in mind the Indian car market, specifically, is the German auto major’s first sub 4 metre sedan release. The car, which comes with a 1.2 litre petrol engine that is mated to a 5 speed manual gear box, will be manufactured locally at the Pune plant of this German company.
“Today is a very special day for Volkswagen in India, as we introduce our first ever made-for-India car line, Volkswagen Ameo,” said Michael Mayer in a statement, who is the Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars India.
The Ameo is totally in line with the company’s philosophy of offering the best of the latest technology and safety standards packed in at an alluring price, he also added. “Through the Ameo, we are confident of cementing Volkswagen’s strong presence in the compact sedan segment and further expand the Volkswagen India family,” Mr. Mayer said.
All variants of this compact sedan vehicle will be equipped with dual front airbags and ABS as standard. The car would be available across all Volkswagen showrooms July 2016 onwards.
The German car company has invested INR 720 crore to manufacture this sub 4 meter car which has been developed and designed especially for the Indian domestic car market keeping the Indian consumers in mind.
With this model, Volkswagen has invested a total of around Rs 5,720 crore in our country ever since its entry in 2007. The Ameo compact sedan will compete in the 25,000 units-a-month sub 4 meter automobile market that constitutes about 8 to 10 per cent of the monthly volume of cars.
This car market has around half a dozen car models with the Swift Dzire from the house of Maruti Suzuki leading with almost 60 per cent market share, followed by Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent.
The Volkswagen Ameo will be currently available only with a petrol engine spread across three variants namely, Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline with their costs in the vicinity of 5.14 lakh to 6.91 Lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai, Pre-Octroi). The petrol versions are driven by a 1.2 litre three cylinder MPI engine that also drives the Polo from Volkswagen’s line up and is tuned to generate 73bhp and 110Nm of peak torque. The motor is paired to a 5 speed manual transmission system. For those looking at diesel model, the German auto major has confirmed that the Ameo diesel version will be arriving in the Indian market towards the end of this year close to the festive season, while a DSG auto variant is also on the cards.
