The Tata Zest compact sedan is the first of the new vehicles from the Pune-based automaker. It was first shown just ahead of the Auto Expo, and was launched in the middle of 2014 in five diesel and four petrol variants. It features a very similar design to that of the hatchback but includes a noticeable but quite decent looking boot. It makes use of the same engine, underpinnings, interior design as well as feature list from the hatchback.
The Tata Zest shares the same design principle as the Bolt hatchback. At the back, the lights bear a similar design to that of the hatch back. All models come with alloy wheels, body coloured bumpers and chrome inserts for a premium appeal. The top variant gets chrome accented fog lamps, LED daytime running lights and LED guide rings on the head lights. The interiors are identical to the hatchback including the overall layout, features and upholstery. The list of features is exhaustive with the top model coming with a touch screen infotainment system by Harman for Tata. Talking of engines, Tata will offer the Zest with the 1.2 litre Revotron engine which is powered by petrol and generates 84bhp and 140Nm torque. The diesel engine on the other hand is the 1.3 litre Quadrajet motor. Transmission options for this compact sedan include a five speed manual as well as an AMT which is a first in this segment provided by Tata.
Ameo is the latest entrant into the compact sedan segment, from the house of German car manufacturer Volkswagen. The German car manufacturer has launched itself into the compact sedan market of Indian with the Ameo which is the compact sedan version of the Polo hatchback. The Volkswagen Ameo is specifically designed keeping in mind the Indian consumers with the aim to derive the most of tax benefits for cars which are less than 4 metre length.
The Ameo looks similar to the Polo with its elegant looks. It retains the same radiator grille, head lamps and front bumper. Stepping inside the car you will find the cabin of the Ameo is also very nicely styled with a good dose of aesthetics. However, it is a bit disheartening to find that the Ameo has been given fabric interiors in place of leather upholstery, though the leather covered steering wheel and the premium plastics used do add a fair touch of premium look to the interiors of this car.
The all new infotainment system is top notch both in terms of the user interface as well as touch screen hard ware. The Ameo offers ample space inside and boot space which is pretty large. The rear passenger seats can be further folded to provide a larger storage area. The Ameo is driven by a petrol 1.2 litre mill and a 1.5 litre diesel engine, both of which come with 5 speed manual transmission.
