Steady demand for the Toyota Camry hybrid in India
Renowned car maker Toyota has said that as much as 90 per cent of the demand for their premium sedan Camry in our country is for its hybrid model. Over time, the Japanese auto maker has been seeing a steady climb in the sales of the Camry Hybrid. In 2013, the proportion of hybrid in Camry sales was only 15 per cent, which soared to 73 per cent within a year and in 2015 it jumped up to 86 per cent.
As much as 90 per cent of sales of the Camry are now generated through the hybrid model according to the Vice Chairman at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Shekhar Vishwanathan. He also added that 419 hybrid units of the Camry were sold between January and April 2016 while only 44 gasoline powered versions of the same were sold in the same period. In 2015, 879 units out of the total of 1, 024 Camry units sold were hybrid models.
Toyota is the only car manufacturer that assembles and sells pure hybrid cars in our country. It started a local assembly of the Camry Hybrid long back in August, 2013. While it builds the Camry Hybrid at its Bengaluru plant, Toyota also sells another such car, the imported Prius Hybrid, in India. All over the world, Toyota has sold 9 million hybrids in 2015, majority of which were Camrys followed by the Prius, he stated, adding further that with the government proposed incentive of INR 70,000 cash discount on each unit, the company expects that the demand for hybrids will only rise.

Currently, the Toyota Camry Hybrid Price is INR 33 lakh in New Delhi, which is the largest market for this vehicle. When questioned about the largest consumer for hybrid cars, Vishwanathan said that though the demand arises mostly from the top 10 metros, smaller cities like Kochi also have great potential. He also narrated an incident where a farmer from a small town in Karnataka paid a visit to a new Toyota showroom and demanded a new Camry hybrid on full cash down payment. He wanted the car immediately for welcoming his son from the United States. Vishwanathan also added that buyers can now receive delivery of the Camry hybrid in only 7-12 days.
