Renault Kwid eats into Alto 800 sales
Renault Kwid has beaten Alto 800 sales in just 4 months
When Renault India had released the Kwid hatchback for a starting price of INR 2.5 lakh in September 2015, the automobile analysts had predicted that it had the potential to make a dent in the sales of India’s bestselling vehicle the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800. It seems that their prediction has turned out to be true, given the sales figures of the first four months of this year.

According to the sales data released, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is still the bestselling car in India. The small car sold 16,583 units in April 2016. However it experienced a 23 per cent drop compared to the 21,531 units sold in April 2015. Alto 800 had seen 22,101 sold units in March 2016 in comparison to the 24,961 cars sold in March 2015 which shows an 11 per cent decline in sales figures. The scenario in February and January was almost same. Maruti Suzuki had sold 21,286 units of the Alto 800 in February 2016, recording a 17 per cent decline and 21, 462 cars in January 2016, which is a 6 per cent drop in sales volume. On the other hand, Kwid from the French car maker Renault has seen a consistent climb in its sales. Renault’s small car sold 7,544 units in February 2016, which climbed up to 9,743 units in March 2016. Last month, Renault sold 9,795 units of the Kwid in our country. This number is likely to increase further as the car has recorded over 1.25 lakh bookings as of now and the company recently ramped up its production. It is clear that Maruti Suzuki Alto 800’s loss has been Renault Kwid’s gain in the entry level hatchback segment in the domestic car market.
It seems Maruti Suzuki is aware of this situation and the Alto facelift has been recently spied. The Alto 800 face lifted version is expected to be released this month. Renault India has also got plans to release the Kwid with a 1,000 cc engine very soon.
It is therefore certain that this market segment will experience the biggest competition in the upcoming months.
