On Holiday? Here are 5 Simple Ways To Protect Your Home
Long Holiday – Peaceful Vacation
You’re about to take a break after working so hard for the past 10 months of the year. Your tickets are booked, accommodation confirmed, bags packed, you’re ready to go!
But before you step out of the door, there are five things you should check on so that you can have a peaceful vacation knowing that your home is safe and sound.
1. Unplug your electrical appliances
Since no one’s going to be at home to use it, you should unplug your electrical appliances before you go. Not only does this help you save on your electricity bill, it also protects your home from unexpected fires caused by damaged electrical appliances. Unplugging also prevents any unwanted damages to your devices as well.
2. Inform your alarm company and trusted neighbours
Besides setting your alarm to ‘away’ mode, you should also inform the home security company that the house will be empty for a few days. In case there’s an intrusion, the security company will be able to notify you and your emergency contact. Ask one of your trusted neighbours to help keep an eye out for any suspicious activities near your home while you’re away too…… and perhaps they may be nice enough to help water the plants?
3. Halt your newspaper subscriptions
Having multiple newspapers stuck in the mailbox or left unattended on your porch tells the bad guys that you’re away. This will put your home at risk of burglary and break-ins. Call up your delivery company to halt your subscription for the duration when you’re away, so you can keep your house looking ‘lived in’.
4. Keep the curtains as they usually are when you’re home
Closed curtains isn’t just a sign of homeowners being away, it also prevents neighbours and the police from observing if anyone has broke into the house. You should also move your valuable items (eg. flat screen TV, expensive home accessories, etc.) out of sight from the window.
5. Don’t announce your holiday plans on social media
Most importantly, don’t let the world know that you’ll be away for a period of time. Even if your privacy settings are strict, you never know that they might fall into the wrong hands. Post about your holiday after you’re back, keep your home safe.
