Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd has been planning to launch the petrol variants of its SUVs – Scorpio and XUV 500 due to the government imposed ban on larger diesel cars, such as SUVs, large cars, even in the NCR. The Scorpio petrol and XUV 500 petrol models are likely to be offered with either different or the same mFALCON petrol engines.
Reports say that Mahindra is working on a different capacity of the mFALCON engines to use them in the existing as well as the upcoming cars to deliver the best performance. The latest all-aluminium mFalcon engines, developed by Mahindra, are light weight, fuel efficient and come with high power density.
There are chances of getting the new petrol motor, may be a 1.2 litre G80 from the Mahindra KUV100, to power its SUVs the Scorpio and XUV 500. Recently, the Supreme Court has declared a ban on diesel cars, so the diesel car makers are likely to face issues in the upcoming months with low sales volumes.
The Delhi NCR region is the largest market for this car segment with several car manufacturing companies like Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and Mercedes-Benz. These companies are seeking alternatives for a workaround to this, and there is only one option available, that is to launch the petrol models instead of diesel ones.
Mahindra is perhaps the most affected with this sudden ban since almost all cars of this company are diesel ones including the Scorpio, XUV 500, Bolero and Xylo. However, the good news is that the diesel cars, which are less than 2000 cc, are exempted from this new rule. This is the reason why the domestic car maker has plans to launch the petrol variants of its products.
The company has been exporting the Scorpio petrol versions, which come equipped with a 2.2 litre turbo petrol engine. Mahindra has worked out every detail including the market conditions, price structure, engine performance and acceptance of the cars before releasing the XUV 500 and Scorpio in petrol models.
The outgoing Scorpio and XUV500 come with a price tag of 8.97 – 14.48 lakh and 11.47 to 17.37 lakh respectively.
