Maharashtra Lok Sabha Elections are scheduled in four phases from 11th to 29th of April. The state possesses 48 seats of which NDA holds 41 and UPA holds 7. NDA and UPA are the major players in Maharashtra in 2014. BJP and Shiv Sena were in alliance along with Swabhimana Paksha (SWP) under NDA and in Indian National Congress (INC) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) were in an alliance under UPA.
2019 NDA Alliance comprises of BJP & Shiv Sena, and UPA alliance comprises of Indian National Congress (INC), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Swabhimana Shetkari Paksha (SSP), Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA), Yuva Swabhiman Party (YSP). Asaduddin Owaisi led AIMIM has also announced that it is going to contest in the Lok Sabha elections from Aurangabad Constituency. This is the first time the party is contesting outside Telangana. VBA leader Prakash Ambedkar has formed an alliance with AIMIM.
Long term allies BJP and Shiv Sena had some differences in the near past. Shiv Sena had been continuously criticizing BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP. However, the two parties have patched things up before the Lok Sabha Elections and decided to contest the elections together.
Congress too has formed the United Progressive Grand Alliance with the other parties and has shared seats with them. Speaking about the formation of the alliance, Maharashtra Congress Chief Ashok Chavan said, “Although some leaders haven’t been happy about it, the parties’ agreement on defeating BJP has made them stand together.”
With the above-mentioned alliances, a close fight is expected between both NDA and UPA. The burning issue of farmers is expected to have an effect in the Assembly as well as the Lok Sabha Elections. Shiv Sena and BJP alliance are confident that they will gain a majority in the upcoming elections, a statement which derives its support from opinion polls from various media organizations.
