The much awaited Nexus 6 was revealed by Google quite recently. The phone has been manufactured in collaboration with Google’s Motorola Mobility. The screen size has been kept at 5.96 inches, which marks the entry of Nexus range of products in to the phablet segment. Google has decided to introduce the latest Nexus through its subsidiary Motorola. The decision can be justified, what with the company meeting with stupendous success in the budget smartphone segment.
The latest Nexus 6 has been provided many upgrades compared to its preceding model, the LG Nexus 5 particularly in terms of internal hardware and design language specifications. A lot of smart phone users, especially those using the LG Nexus 5, who are at the very end of their contracts with service providers, would definitely be interested to find out the latest features of the Nexus 6.
Here is a short spec by spec comparison of the LG Nexus 5 and the Nexus 6, which would help you decide better which handset to opt for.
Display and Design Sensibilities
The LG Nexus 5 was a flagship model from the Korean manufacturer which won accolades for including tough quality polycarbonate material for the rear cover for better grip over the handset. It was lacking in the previous Nexus’ body, the Nexus 4, which had a glass based coating which was slightly slippery for users in terms of handling.
The LG Nexus 5 came with a fully HD IPS display measuring 4.95 inches and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen guard. The pixel density of the screen is 445ppi. Motorola has taken this spec a notch up with incorporating the acclaimed design of the Moto X 2nd Gen, which is quite ergonomic. The bump in the middle and sloped edges on the corner does offer a highly comfortable grip over the handset, despite the gigantic size. The handset is also said to be water proof.
The new Nexus 6 has a QHD screen with a resolution of 1440X2560p and a screen which was an AMOLED one, shielded by the Corning Gorilla 3 glass. The screen is a 5.96 inches one which offers a pixel density of 493 ppi.
RAM, Processor and Storage
When it comes to internal hardware, it can be said safely that the Nexus 6 has received quite a few updates over the predecessor. A quad core Snapdragon 805 2.7 GHz processor has been introduced in the new model to make it faster along with Adreno 420 for supporting graphics. The RAM included is a 3GB one.
The LG Nexus 5 has a quad-core Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz CPU with graphics of Adreno 330 and RAM of 2GB. The storage models offered are 16GB and 32GB. The difference in performance between the two phones shall be made particularly on the basis of the RAM installed in them. The processors are quite comparable and performance offered by both of them would be equivalent more or less. One of the important features of the Nexus range was the expansion of memory on the phones. However, Motorola, Google’s current OEM partner has gone against including extra storage space. It has instead brought in a 32GB and a 64GB inbuilt memory format for the phone by dropping the 16GB one.
Camera Specs
The Nuxus 5 came with a 8MP primary shooter which has optical image stabilization or OIS and full HD video recording with HDR+, a 360 degree view photo sphere along with a 1.3MP secondary camera. The Nexus 5 was much criticized for these specs even though it had many features which enhanced photography experience.
For the latest Nexus 6, Motorola has improved upon the camera specs to a 13MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, dual LED ring flash along with 4K video recording. The front camera is a 2MP one, which is quite similar to the Moto X 2nd Gen.
Operating Systems
Both the phones come with a stock Android version. The only difference lies in the inclusion of the Android L 5.0 in the Nexus 6 while the Nexus 5 runs on the Android KitKat 4.4.4. The Nexus 6 is set to be made available in the month of November. However, LG Nexus 5 users have been assured of the update and they will be able to enjoy the Android Lollipop 5.0 OS.
The Android Lollipop shall be provided in different devices such as the Nexus 4, LG Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 along with Google Play devices.
The Android 5.0 Lollipop OS has an overhauled material of design language, which brings in user interface that is interactive and is a good replacement of the Dalvik with the ART offering the default runtime and other enhancements.
Pricing Details
The Nexus 6 has been put up for pre ordering for Rs 40,000 for the 32GB device and Rs 43,000 for the 64GB one. Compared to the previous Nexus phones, it may seem to be quite expensive. However, compared to other flagship devices from other makers such as Samsung and Apple, this is a little lower. The Apple iPhone 6 Plus costs around Rs 62,500 while the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 costs roughly Rs 61,500.
Currently, the LG Nexus 5 is available for Rs 28,999 for the 16GB model and Rs 32,000 for the 32GB models. If you are planning to buy a used model of the phone, then it would be a good idea as you would get it at a discounted rate. Buying the LG Nexus 5 is quite sensible as you can access advanced features with it. The Android L update shall be made available on it too and hence you won’t be missing out on much. The price difference between the Nexus 6 and LG Nexus 5 is quite a bit which is why it would be better to stick with a used version of the Nexus 5. Besides, the performance of the Nexus 6 is yet to be assessed and hence hasty decisions should not be taken regarding the phone.
