BMW will provide 365 engines and transmissions to engineering and technical institutes across every state and union territory in India. This constitutes a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiative called Skill-Next. It will be done on a first-come-first-served basis and will be implemented by the end of 2018.
According to Vikram Pawah, President, BMW Group India, the lack of highly skilled technicians will soon pose a major issue, given the rate at which the luxury car market is growing. He asserted that this problem can be tackled with the ‘Skill Next’ initiative.
The engine transmission mechanism that will be used for learning purposes includes the 2.0litre twin turbo, in-line, four-cylinder diesel motor packaged with the eight-speed, sequential-shift, automatic transmission. In India, the combination is a workhorse for the 20d iterations of the 3-series, 3-series GT, 5-series, X1 and X3.
The Mini Cooper Countryman D is powered by the same engine. Following the delivery, 40 after-sales technicians will be appointed by BMW across twenty cities at BMW dealerships. These technicians will give aspirants a hands-on experience on the mechanism.
It is interesting to note that the engines and transmissions that BMW will use for the training purposes were badly affected by water during the Chennai flood. They were rendered futile for cars.
Sachin Tendulkar, veteran cricketer and BMW India’s brand ambassador, was also present at the occasion. He expressed his strong belief in initiatives like ‘Skill Next’ which will give a boost to automotive engineering skills in our country.
He added that through this step, technical students will get an opportunity to receive direct training on BMW engine and transmission. After all, understanding technology through the first-hand experience is bound to make it easier.
