Street foods are something which is common all over India, but varies according to regional tastes and traditions. It’s rightly said “There is no love sincere than love for food and no greater exploration than exploring street food”
Mumbai is home to population of different religions, castes, creeds and also nationalities, which has given rise to mix of street foods from all cultures.And I must say that street vendors here come up with unusual and crazy innovations every time, which never fails in terms of taste. Although, Mumbai boasts of some of the best restaurants that offer you world class cuisines from all across the globe, it’s the street food here that the city craves for.
In fact, restaurants in various parts of the world have incorporated Mumbai’s street food into their menu cards. Ours is a metropolis that knows no boundaries and never sleeps, so it’s no surprise that Mumbai is the Indian city most associated with street food, where other cities have a few selected favorites. Some of the famous road side food stalls are located at Girgaum, Juhu, Chowpatty, Nariman Point, Mohammed Ali road etc and I must say that it would be a real sin to come down here and miss out the street foods.
It’s equally enjoyed by both rich and poor. In fact it’s the lunch and the dinner for most of the poor crowd here, since its exceptionally cheap and filling. Even the thought of having them gives us a feeling of joy and contentment. I think list of best street foods in Mumbai would be just endless, so I have picked some of my all-time favorites which I really relish.
So, for all foodies, down goes the list of some mouth-watering street foods in Mumbai which I love:
1. Vada Pav: Local to Mumbai, known as the Indian Burger, it is one the famous street foods in Mumbai. This simple vegetarian dish is made of deep fried mashed potato balls sandwiched between slices of Pav (small Indian bun) with green chillies and chutney for accompaniment. Now days there are many variants of vadas available.
2. Pani Puri Also Known as Gol Gappa in North India It consists of a round, hollow puri shell filled with a spicy potato-based stuffing and dipped in a watery sauce, or pani, to fill up the hollow inside the dough, with a right balance of sweet, spicy and sour taste, it’s a real treat to our taste buds. Once Serving contains six Puri’s, with an extra sukha puri at the end.
3. Pav Bhaji: A finger licking dish, its more than a mere snack. It comes with a plate of mashed potatoes and other vegetables with some spicy masalas added and a dollop of butter at the top, cornered with chopped onions and some coriander leaves and lemon slice , with two pavs toasted with oodles of butter..Yum!! A Must try dish!!
Bhurji Pav: It’s one of Mumbai’s famous and fast selling food. It’ s available round the clock, Anda Bhurji – Scrambled Egg and blended with some aromatic spices & onions its accompanied by hunks of bread to mop it up, tastes out of the world!!!
Falooda: A rich drink, Falooda is vermicelli mixed with milk, almonds, pistachios, a bit of rose syrup and the key ingredient — sabza or basil seeds — topped up with two scoops of ice cream. Refreshing, rosy, energizing, it’s a great pick-me-up on a hot day.
